Girl Scouts Beyond Bars (GSBB) is a nationwide Girl Scout program that provides relationship-building programs for incarcerated mothers and their daughters. Now in its fourth year, the program in Rhode Island currently serves 9 girls and 7 mothers at the Gloria MacDonald Medium Security Facility at the RI Adult Correctional Institute. The program includes two mothers-only meetings each month, two mother-daughter meetings each month and girls-only field trips. The objective of GSBB is to give families opportunities to reunite and strengthen their relationships. The program uses specially designed Girl Scout curriculum to build self-esteem, improve communication, and develop life skills and good decision making.
